Pinoy street food: Kwek-Kwek chicken egg recipe

A simple, yet delicious midday or midnight snack, kwek-kwek is an egg, quail or chicken, dipped in an orange colored batter and deep-fried. Served with a spiced vinegar sauce, this simple snack will make you come back for more. In this article we will be using chicken eggs for the recipe.


For Eggs:

6 hard boiled and peeled chicken eggs

1 ½ cup of all purpose flour

½-¾ cup water

1-2 drops orange colored food coloring

salt and pepper to taste


For sauce:

1 cup vinegar

1 small hot chili pepper chopped

1 small onion chopped

1 clove garlic chopped

salt and/or pepper to taste


For Eggs:

  1. Heat oil in deep frying pan, wok, or deep fryer.

  2. Mix flour, water, salt, pepper and food coloring till smooth.

  3. Stir eggs into batter to coat evenly.

  4. Spoon a couple of battered eggs at a time into oil and cook until just crisp.

  5. Drain and serve with sauce.

For Sauce:

  1. Prepare this ahead of time so the flavors will have time to blend.

  2. Simply mix all ingredients together and let flavors blend until you are ready to server your kwek-kwek!

This recipe is simple, and will give you a very tasty snack that will make you crave more. If you are lucky enough to be visiting the Philippines you will see this wonderful snack sold at many street vendors.
