Pink, aka Alecia Moore, was just named the Billboard Woman of the Year for 2013. Pink will receive her latest accolade at the magazine's Women in Music event in NYC this December. Billboard cited her staggering album sales and current sold-out international tour as two of the top reasons in choosing the powerful singer for this year's award, according to their website on Monday, Sept. 16.
Pink's sixth album "The Truth About Love" has sold an amazing 1.7 million albums since being released last year, reports the Boston Herald. It's launched three Top 10 hits, including the melodic No. 1 song "Just Give Me a Reason".
That song, in which she sang duet with Fun.'s Nate Ruess, marked her fourth No. 1 single on Billboard's Hot 100.
Pink responded to the news saying she was "absolutely shocked and surprised" by the honor. She also first thanked her fans, and her friends and all the incredibly talented artists she worked with on her latest album.
"Truth" also garnered the pop-rock high priestess a Grammy nom for Best Pop Vocal Album earlier this year. It became Pink's first album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 after its release a year ago this month.
Her last five albums have all peaked in the top 10 on that list as well, and Pink's sold an astonishing 40 million plus albums, and 65 million singles including 20 million digital downloads over her career.
Billboard's Editorial Director Bill Werde said Pink has basically been in a class all by herself among women in music this year.
Anyone with an ear for music would have to agree, when it comes to vocals Pink is in a class all by herself. Her innate ability to translate that talent into beat-driven pop hits that immediately draw you in and won't let you out, speaks to her greater music genius.
Not just did she have the top-selling album and song for a woman, but also a "blockbuster" sold-out international arena tour.
Billboard's 8th annual Women in Music Event is designed to celebrate the most powerful and talented women in the music business.
You can't do better than Pink for that honor. The event coincides with the publication of the magazine's Women in Music Power Players list.
This year's event will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 10 in New York City.
