Pink Floyd has invited fans to share in celebrating the 40th anniversary of their legendary album, "The Dark Side of the Moon" on March 24th, according to the Pink Floyd official Facebook page on Tuesday, March 19.
The band's official Facebook page post reads,
"Pink Floyd would like to invite you to take part in a global playback event, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their seminal album, "The Dark Side Of The Moon" on March 24, marking 40 years since the album's original UK release date – join us in turning the moon dark on pinkfloyd.com."
"Listen to the album and tweet your thoughts, memories and photos using #DarkSide40 to turn the moon dark."
Pink Floyd is best known as the English rock band that achieved international acclaim with their progressive and psychedelic music. Wikipedia writes that the band was distinguished by their use of philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, and elaborate live shows, they are one of the most commercially successful and musically influential groups in the history of popular music.
The band was founded in 1965, original band members included Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright. They first gained popularity performing in London's underground music scene during the late 1960s.
Pink Floyd achieved critical and commercial success with the concept albums "The Dark Side of the Moon' (1973), 'Wish You Were Here" (1975), 'Animals" (1977), 'The Wall' (1979) and 'The Final Cut" (1983).
Pink Floyd recorded 'The Dark Side of the Moon" between May 1972 and January 1973, with EMI staff engineer Alan Parsons at Abbey Road. The title is an allusion to lunacy rather than astronomy.
"The Darkside of the Moon" was the eighth studio album released by Floyd, and debuted on March 24th 1973, becoming an instant chart success in the UK and throughout Western Europe, earning an enthusiastic response from critics.
The album is one of the most commercially successful rock albums of all time, a US number one, it remained on the Billboard chart for more than fourteen years, selling more than 40 million copies worldwide.
