Wim Wender’s new documentary, Pina, is now playing at the Violet Crown Cinema.
Wenders emerged out of the New German Cinema of the late 60’s, directing his first feature Summer in the City in 1970. In the 80’s, his blossoming collaboration with cinematographer Robby Muller and playwright Sam Shepherd yielded one of his most well known films, Paris, Texas. Later that decade, he directed his most acclaimed arthouse film, Wings of Desire.
Pina is his first film in 3D, a dance documentary inspired by the late great German choreographer Pian Bausch, who died in 2009. Featuring the emsemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Wenders treats the audience to a visual experience beyond the stage, taking the troupe to the city of Wuppertal, Bausch’s home and the source of her inspiration.
The film is Wender’s tribute to an icon of dance, utilizing a new technology to capture movements that are beyond timeless. Check the Violet Crown website for more information.
