After a hectic couple of years during which photographer Annie Leibovitz was facing bankruptcy, her latest work Pilgrimage is an outstanding compilation of photographs. Gone are the glamour, the VIPs, and the sash surroundings. In Pilgrimage people are absent altogether but their shadow often casts a different light on Leibovitz's previous work. A still of Emily Dickinson's house and a photo of Dickinson's only surviving dress are more telling than Nicole Kidman in an endless drape. Pilgrimage is a book about places dire to Leibotvitz and her deceased partner Susan Sontag. Although a visual journey in itself Pilgrimage reveals a Leibovitz that embarked on a quest for her inner self. Annie Leibovitz will present the book in one of Brooklyn's most sympathetic bookstores.
Pilgrimage by Annie Leibovitz, Wednesday December 14 at 7 pm, free entrance
