Why is today so special?
Today, March 3 is the designated day to celebrate deli foods! Today is “National Cold Cuts Day!
This day everyone who enjoys a sandwich, appetizer tray or antipasto can load up on all their favorites. Items that can be purchased may be vacuumed sealed but most are available for customers to request specific amounts that their families will enjoy; either by a slab, a chunk, sliced, per pound or slivered if they so choose.
Many cold cut meats are also cured. They are seasoned and prepared so they are safe to eat cold. Most cold cuts are higher in fat, nitrates and sodium than other foods that are baked and sliced to order at the deli counter.
Deli foods consist of pre-cooked meats, cheeses, salads and can be purchased in the form of sandwiches that are either pre-made or made to order. The most favorite sandwich is the submarine sandwich or the hero sandwich.
Cold cuts have been referred to by many names over the years. Of course they have been called cold cults but also have been said to be: luncheon meats, lunch meats, sandwich meats, cold meats, deli meats and sliced meats. Many favorites include: pastrami, roast beef, turkey and ham.
Many cheeses such as Swiss, Gouda, Havarti, American, Cheddar and Mozzarella can also be found at the deli counter and are considered part of the cold cuts line of sandwich fillers.
Celebrate “National Cold Cuts Day” and stop in a local deli near your home and enjoy some wonderful sandwich making delights today!
