Pilates or Cardio?

Reformer with Jumpboard

You have 1 hour.  Do you go to Pilates, or do you do cardio?  With the addition of Jumpboard classes at local studios, you no longer have to choose.

The jumpboard, sometimes referred to as the footplate, is a piece of apparatus that attaches to the end of the reformer.  You lay on the reformer as you normally would, and jump or "rebound" against the plate.  Changing the spring resistance on the reformer changes to focus of the exercise- the heavier the springs, the more you will work your quads and your legs.  The lighter the springs, the more you will work your abs.

Although class structure will vary from studio to studio, and even teacher to teacher, usually short bouts of jumping are alternated with intermediate to advanced reformer moves, making it a lot like a circuit class.  It may sound simple, but the workout becomes intense very quickly, and is not for those that are new to Pilates, and it is not very easy to modify if you are injured.

To try a class: Simply Pilates at the corner of Edgehill and Villa offers two jumpboard classes each week, and rumor has it that Maryland Farms YMCA recently purchased a set of boards and will soon begin offering classes.  Call or check the websites for class times and availability, and happy jumping!
