Although some are adamant that Reformer work should only be done after Mat work has been mastered, there are differing opinions. The springs can either add weight to an exercise, making it more challenging, or they can create a support structure to assist the body into a new movement. Some feel that this potential for support make it ideal for new students.
Pilates fundamentals can be taught on the Reformer, but need to be mastered before intermediate or advanced level work can be attempted. The moving carriage challenges core stability and requires a great deal of concentration and coordination to maintain proper form. Students require more supervision while on a reformer than while practicing mat work.
The Reformer is a great tool for students with injuries as it can be adjusted to offer support in the necessary areas. It it also ideal for athletes who are using Pilates to cross-train and target specific muscle groups. Additionally, jumpboard classes allow you to combine Pilates and cardio together in one class.
Currently, group reformer classes are offered at the following sites in the Nashville area. You can check their websites or call for current schedules and pricing: Praire Life Fitness, Simply Pilates, YMCA.
