Pilates class guide: Mat classes

Pilates Mat Class with Props

Mat Pilates is the most economical of all types of Pilates, and the most versatile in terms of location and equipment.

In his ground breaking book Pilates' Return to Life Through Contrology Joseph Pilates laid out 34 exercises and made the famous claim: "In 10 sessions, you will feel the difference. In 20, you will see the difference. And in 30, you'll be on your way to having a whole new body."

Pilates drew inspiration from yoga, from his background as a boxer, and from martial arts, among the other disciplines he studied.  He observed the way humans moved and used their bodies, and compared it to the way animals moved and used their bodies, and developed exercises that he claimed would help rectify the imbalances and problems that humans had developed due to incorrect or inefficient movement.

Most mat classes now blend more contemporary exercises with the classical repertoire, although you will still find some studios that stick strictly to the classical exercises and their original prescribed order.  Some classes will add the use of props such as foam rollers, fit or exercise balls, Magic Circles and other equipment, but, at the heart of it, all you need to do Mat Pilates is a Mat.

Pilates Mat classes can be found at every Pilates studio in town and most fitness centers.  You can also practice at home with one of the hundreds of books or DVDs available.  There are also websites, such as Ultimate Pilates Workouts where you can view and try routines for free, or pay a small fee to download them.
