So summer has been rolling along for a while now, and chances are your kids’ rooms may be looking like something that Oscar the Grouch would love. But with August bearing down and thoughts of gearing up for fall starting to glimmer, it may be a time when many parents start thinking of mess management.
Getting kids to clean up after themselves can be a chore in itself, especially when the sun is shining, but sometimes finding the humor in a situation can help ease the pain a bit.
Pigsty by Mark Teague is a great book about messy rooms. Wendel, the same character that appears in One Halloween Night and The Secret Shortcut, is told to clean his room. When his attempts to shove everything under the bed fail to impress his mother, she declares his room a pigsty and makes it clear that it is his problem to deal with.
Then come the pigs. Wendel doesn’t mind at first, but problems soon arise and Wendel has to learn his lesson the hard way. These problems are where the humor leaks in, both in the fabulous pictures and the silly puns that will amuse adults and kids alike (check out the license plate on the truck).
Illustrated with Teague’s signature vibrant colors and written with his sly humor, this book is sure to entertain and maybe, just maybe, lighten the load of room cleaning.
