A conversation Thanksgiving with the neighbors’ son who lives in the Hampton – Newport News area of Virginia got me to thinking about bar-b-que, Pierce’s Pitt Bar-B-Que down in Williamsburg. Since then I have had bar-b-que on the brain, Pierce’s that is! I have a hankering for their special sauced, hickory smoked pulled pork sandwiches with their cole slaw nestled right under the pork - a great ying to yang flavor profile.

They are considered one of America’s top 100 bar-b-que destinations. The last time I was there it was in the early a.m. and my friend was able to get me a tour of the famous smokehouse. I shot some video, of course, of course, and never got to posting it, so this seems as good as anytime.

The pitts, spelled pitts because the sign maker way back in 1971 when Doc Pierce started with a little stand didn’t know how to spell pit. There are three pitts cooking up a smoke storm and the aroma hits you way before you arrive. Each pitt can cook 2,000 pounds of meat per day and is located next to the restaurant.

So I’m thinking that maybe a run to Colonial Williamsburg for some holiday shopping and some que! The weather has been nice and a weekend away seems just the thing. The Grand Illumination at Colonial Williamsburg is this weekend, December 6th from 4:45 p.m to 9 p.m. In the 18th century, illuminations were sometimes held to commemorate the birth of the reigning sovereign. Today, Colonial Williamsburg’s Grand Illumination celebrates the winter holidays. Musical performances on multiple stages and fireworks launched from three locations usher in the season with a bang.

Also I should hit the Holiday Indoor Festival (12:00 PM - 5:00 PM) Williamsburg Outlet Mall Free & Open to the Public, to be held Saturday Afternoons December 5th, December 12th & December 19th, Noon to 5 p.m. Vendors selling Arts & Crafts, Art Displays, Book Signings, and so much more!
