It was a hot, humid morning for the Annual Pier House 5K held on Labor Day, Monday, September 1, 2014 in Long Branch, New Jersey

The close to 1000 participants lined up on the Long Branch Promenade for the 8:30 a.m. start. The National Anthem was sung and Race Director, Phil Hinck of Monmouth Beach, New Jersey gave the runners final instructions before giving them the command to start.

The course for this year’s race ws modified a bit and was essentially and out and back route along the ocean front. The route took the runners through Pier Village and then to the end of Ocean Avenue in Long Branch where the boardwalk used to be and then returned back to a finish by the great lawn and amphitheater along the ocean front.

Coming in first overall and for the men was Andrew Brodeur of Bethesday, Maryland a frequent top finisher and winner of many local events in a time of 15:22. He was followed closely behind by Cory Nanni of Durham, North Carolina in a time of 15:26 and then Brian Quilty of Brick, New Jersey in 15:44.

For the women breaking the finish tape first was Dactilla Booth of Long Branch, New Jersey in a time of 18:33. She was followed by Marissa Alberti of Long Branch in 18:48 and then Erin Conroy of New York City, New York in 19:10 to round out the top three women.

After the 5K kid’s races were held on the lawn for various age groups where all were winners. Awards were then presented to include many random awards, top finishers and age group awards. Tim Mcloone a sponsor of the event hosted the awards and explained the significance of the beneficiary of the event Holiday Express.

The event was the finale in the Jersey Shore Grand Prix which also included Spring Lake 5, Sheehan Classic, Belmar 5 and Asbury Park 5K. Series awards were presented to the top finishers. After the race many of the participants headed over to McLoone’s Pier House for a post-race celebration.
