It takes some searching to find them, but there are places in Los Angeles that provide exceptional setting for simple, sweet, and even idyllic romance.
Picnicking atop far-stretched green under the shade of lush, old trees. Listening to the hum of hummingbirds and dragon flies that zoom away into the distant groves. Spying a family of peacocks shuffling beside you in the grass. Answering the amicable plea for friendship from geese and squirrels content in their surroundings and picky about food. This is not only the stuff of Disney movies for LA residents.
The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden gives you access to 127 acres of old, cared for trees and plants from around the world. Here you can find rose gardens, fruit groves, orchid dens and dense tropical, prehistoric, bamboo, American, Australian and African forests with narrow dirt paths that beg of exploration. Or you can just sit on rolling lawns or benches with your date, feeling the harmony of the unique natural setting.
Along with a lake and pond, the Arboretum has fountains, a man-made waterfall and historic sites to look out upon, listen to, and explore. Since the grounds are so large and the gardens are not widely known or visited, there are wide expanses of peaceful solitude.
Adult admission is $8, cash only, and there is a café on the grounds but you can be even more budget-friendly and pack your own blanket and picnic lunch. Give yourself ample time to spend here, so that you can enjoy a slow and leisurely pace as you relax or venture about the massive grounds.
