A Twitter picture of a guard at the Lincoln Memorial captioned "Obama's America" was called an "eerie snapshot" of the country under Barack Obama by Twitchy on Tuesday.
The angle of the photo posted to the social media site shows Lincoln's face between the guard's knees and gives the impression that anyone wanting to see the memorial dedicated to the 16th President -- known as "The Great Emancipator" -- is likely to end up staring down the business end of a firearm.
The person who tweeted the picture simply wrote: "Obama's America..."
"True. Makes me wanna cry. Or fight. Think I'll fight," one person said in response.
The Washington Free Beacon's Lachlin Markay called it "pretty striking."
"The attempted closing of memorials in Washington, D.C., has produced many photographs, but few have been as gripping as this one," Twitchy said.
As part of the government shutdown, the administration has directed that all national parks and monuments be closed, no matter how remote or out of the way.
An article at the Free Beacon, for example, said that Park Service agents were sent to the remote Claude Moore Colonial Farm in Virginia to remove staff and volunteers from the property, despite the fact that no government resources are used for its maintenance or operation.
“You do have to wonder about the wisdom of an organization that would use staff they don’t have the money to pay to evict visitors from a park site that operates without costing them any money,” said managing director Anna Eberly, who explained the farm has always been exempted from previous shutdowns.
“In all the years I have worked with the National Park Service … I have never worked with a more arrogant, arbitrary and vindictive group representing the NPS,” she added.
While the farm itself is privately operated, the land it sits on is owned by the NPS.
The Washington Examiner said the administration sent more guards to the World War II memorial than it sent to Benghazi the year the consulate was attacked.
According to Charlie Spiering, the administration dispatched at least seven officials were sent to barricade and block tourists from the memorial.
"That is two more than the State Department had in Benghazi a year ago on the night of the terrorist attack that killed four, including the U.S. ambassador," the Examiner said.
In response, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said the RNC is willing to pay to keep the World War II memorial open for 30 days.
"We're willing to pay the bill," he said.
He asked the DNC to join him in keeping the memorial open, but Democrats declined, claiming they are working to keep parks open by funding the government.
But Democrats have shunned every offer made by Republicans, something Priebus touched on.
"Our donors have had it with a stubborn Democratic party who've been offered one deal after the next by the Republicans in the House," he said.
