Looking for a unique way to honor your guest in celebration of their birth or other event? Do it with a Photo Collage! And even better.... an Edible Photo Collage right on their cake!
A collage is a collection of pictures (or other items) arranged together as one piece of art. It is a wonderful way to celebrate a person, having a visual recollection of memories put together in one setting for them. Anything worth photographing is worth remembering, and anything worth remembering is worth celebrating!
Making a photo collage for a cake takes time and preparation, as well as a good eye. But it is well worth the effort and is sure to impress everyone who sees it.
You start first by collecting the photos that will be a part of your collage. There are many ways of doing this, either by hard copy or digital. I prefer to collect the hard copy so I can visually arrange them in front of me in the order I would like them displayed. Once you have the photos, you will be ready to make your edible images for the cake.
If you don't have your own edible image making machine, you can take them to a bakery or other specialty shop that has one. Most grocery stores with bakeries will have one. Keep in mind that many bakeries will not copy a photo that has a copyright to it, like a professional photographer like LifeTouch, Olan Mills, etc., especially if their logo is on the photo itself (candid shots are usually better to use for collages anyway). Also, they charge an average of $8.00 per sheet. So keep this in mind, as well. You can also send them off to be made if time permits and you trust the online provider you have found. Personally, I don't send my pictures off but this is an option.
Once you have your edible pictures, you only need to cut them apart and arrange them the way you want to display them just as you have done with the original photos. You will want to be quick about this as you do not want the edible images to start drying out. Once you know how you want to arrange them, cover them with plastic or place them in ziplock bags to keep them soft.
When you have baked and iced your cake, you can begin placing the edible photos on in the order you pre-arranged them. Once they are on the cake, they will be hard to remove. So make sure you place them exactly where you want them to stay. Once they are all on, you can begin filling in the spaces between them with icing decorations or writing.
Be creative! Your guests will love it! Have fun and be proud of your work! Enjoy!
