A Novel by Ben White
Reviewed By Michael Webster
This book follows the fortunes of character actor, Kent Ashford, who is waiting for his ‘big break’. The opportunity for fame presents itself when the role as Deputy District Attorney Christopher Darden becomes available in a film about the legal personalities involved in the OJ Simpson trial.
As luck would have it, Kent happens to be a Darden look-alike and seems to be a favourite for the role. He does however, lack knowledge of the court system and in order to give himself the edge on his competitors, decides to go to the Central Criminal Courts in Manhattan to observe the legal processes.
As fate would have it, trying to prove himself as simply a visitor is not as straightforward as it would seem. What happens next is far more than he could ever envisage and the storyline develops from there. Life changing events occur and he becomes entangled in legal intricacies and ‘horse trading’ as the story unfolds.
This is Ben White’s first novel and he uses his thirty-odd years’ experience of international legal practice, to introduce interesting and realistic characters and show us a novel, if sometimes cynical, look at the US legal system.
This book is an easy to read piece of fiction, fast paced with reasonably sized chapters and is ideal to pick up during coffee breaks. The characters are clearly described, colourful and easily envisaged; the situations are well explained and understandable, and the storytelling provides plenty of drama, romance and even some humour.
Picked is a good, casual read with a new and interesting approach and being reasonably priced is well worth a try.
