Pick Pick-Staiger for music in March

March opens with a roar of music as Northwestern University unleashes a lion’s share of concerts at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall on 50 Arts Circle Drive in Evanston, including:

Murray Perahia, piano

Works by Bach, Beethoven, Schumann and Chopin are performed. Tickets are $10-$22.

University Singers, “Gloria” 

7:30 p.m. Monday, March 3

“Gloria” from “Masque of Angels” as well as Mozart’s “Missa brevis” No. 9 in B-flat Major are performed under the direction of Emily Ellsworth. Tickets are $4-$6.

Contemporary Music Ensemble

Timothy J. Robblee directs the ensemble with guest guitarist Eric Singh. Tickets are $4-$6.

Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, “Student Showcase”

Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor make up concert directed by Victor Yampolsky with pianists Xuan He and Xia Jiang. Tickets are $5-$8.

7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 9

Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherezade” is performed by Northwestern’s non-major orchestra. Tickets are $4-$6.

Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra

7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13

Robert G. Hasty conducts a program featuring solo performances by violinist Almita Vamos and violist Roland Vamos. Tickets are $4-$6.

Symphonic Band, “Origins” 

7:30 p.m. Friday, March 14

Works inspired by music of the Renaissance and Baroque will be performed. Tickets are $4-$6.

Spring Festival, Nellie McKay and Turtle Island Quartet: “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing”

Grammy Award-winning Turtle Island Quartet and Nellie McKay harken to a 1920s cabaret with the music of Billie Holiday, Billy Strayhorn and more. Tickets are $10-$20.

Throughout the month, the Evanston eatery The Stained Glass is offering a Dinner and a Show deal for ticket-buyers who dine at the wine bar bistro before their Pick-Staiger concert. One guest per table will receive a complimentary entree with the purchase of another when they show their concert tickets and are seated before 6:30 p.m.
