Picacho Hills Country Club offers an experience many great golf courses lack. Gaining playing privileges to the exclusively private country club in Las Cruces, NM without being a member might be the most difficult thing about this golf course. The truth of the matter, once you get the opportunity to play it, is that it may be the fairest test of golf in the Southwest with a layout that is arguably the best maintained and best kept secret in the Borderland.
One will also experience a truly awesome finish to this great golf course in Picacho Hills’s 18th hole. At 533 yards from the Championship Tees, it offers a great finish to a competitive round of golf whether it is the end to a great local gambling game of “Wolf”, or its past hosting of PGA Tour and United States Open Qualifiers. This finishing hole provides a natural desert landscape with out-of-bounds to both the right and left of the elevated tee box. A wide fairway to this dogleg right par five is offered to the golfer seeking to traverse a second shot past a tall stand of trees at the corner of the dog leg to the narrow green. Additionally, the green is protected by water from the front left all the way to the back right with bunkers long and right of the green offering only a sliver of land for those shots not carried all the way to the green. Golfer’s attempting to hit this green from long distance need to have the right angle and consideration for the risk-reward aspect of attempting such a shot. However, laying up and too close to the water hazard usually means hitting a shot from an uneven lie, usually downhill. Many fates of the 19th hole spending for a golfer have drastically changed on this particular 18th hole.
The 18th hole at Picacho Hills also offers a fantastic view from the tee box where one can see the entire valley against the backdrop of the Organ Mountains. A round that is finished in the late afternoon and early evening hours will give the golfer an exhilarating view as the sun sets, and should prove to be the perfect ending to a day spent on a great golf course.
So, if the opportunity arises to play Picacho Hills Country Club, remember that even though the entire golfing experience at PHCC is one to remember, the very best may actually be saved for last.
