The 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony featured Canadian musicians from across the country performing some of their best loved hits as well as songs written especially for the Vancouver Olympics.
The first musical performance of the evening came from 16-year-old Canadian singing prodigy Nikki Yanofsky who delivered the Canadian National Anthem. Nikki Yanfosky hit the number one spot on iTunes this week with her song 'I Believe,' which is the theme song for the Canadian television network CTV's Olympic coverage.
Canadian born singers Bryan Adams and Nelly Furtado delivered the first live musical number of the 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony with the song 'Bang the Drum,' which Adams co-wrote especially for the Vancouver games. Bryan Adams and Nelly Furtado were accompanied by Canadian Aboriginal dancers.
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada native k.d. lang performed Montreal, Quebec native Leonard Cohen's classic 'Hallelujah" while scenes of Canada were projected through BC Place stadium.
Singer Sarah McLachlan, who was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, erved double duty for the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony. McLachlan performed her hit 'Ordinary Miracle' live during the opening spectacle less than 24 hours after carrying the Olympic torch on one leg of it's journey through Vancouver.
Canadian folk singing icon Joni Mitchell's classic 'Both Sides Now' was used during the Opening Ceremony to accompany the Cirque-du-Soleil-esque dance on a wire portion of the production. Mithcell was born in Fort Macleod, Alberta.
Grammy Award winning Canadian singer Anne Murray also participated in the Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, carrying the Olympic flag into BC Place Stadium with other native superstars including actor Donald Sutherland and hockey great Bobby Orr.
