Photos: The PK call & Sounders over KC

Rick Morrison has sent us his match photos from Tuesday night's US Open Cup victory over the Kansas City WIzards. Of special interest to fans will be his capture of the penalty kick foul at the end of the match. Fans of both clubs are of mixed opinions about the call that allowed Sebastien Le Toux to step to the PK spot and clinch the match in the 89th minute.

Here's Rick's photo and a zoom in of the same shot.

Fredy Montero enters the penalty area and plays the ball ahead to himself. As it heads for the endline Kansas City goalkeeper Kevin Hartman makes the play.

What do you think?

The Seattle Times' Jose Romero got a cryptic reaction from Fredy Montero on the call.

The mystery deepens. (We embedded a club highlight video in our initial match report, too.)

See a few more photos from Rick in the preview gallery below. All of Rick's match shots are now up at GOALSeattle.com.

Open Cup Venue Talk

Some Sounders fans are wondering why the club won't play its semifinal cup match against Houston at the much-bigger Qwest Field. I got an email response from club GM Adrian Hanauer on this topic.

"We had several conversations about this prior to submitting our bid for hosting the quarter-finals and the semi-finals.

We decided that the best solution was to play the games at Starfire for several reasons:

First, we and the team love the intimacy of the venue and how close the fans are to the action. Second, we have had very good success as a club at Starfire in Open Cup play and feel very comfortable that it provides a home field advantage. Third, for each of the previous games, there have been standing-room tickets available right up until game time. So, we do not feel as though demand is magnitudes of scale greater than supply. We hope to educate fans over time about The US Open Cup, and there may be a day when we feel as though we would be able to fill Qwest Field for an Open Cup semi-final or even an earlier round.

All of the above said... we are discussing what our decision would be, should we be lucky enough to advance to the Open Cup Final, and if we were to win the bid to host. We are certainly considering a move to Qwest Field for that game."

I can't believe that even with that great photo, 3 people STILL voted that a PK was the wrong call? Must be ta trolls, still bitter about last week. Either that, or they're bloody f'ing morons.

one picture doesnt prove anything. It could be that the picture is just a form of an illusion where shades and angles play a role.

What about what happened just before or after this picture? Maybe montero cleverly stuck his foot in, without trying to keep going.

Although i agree that it was a foul, i feel that this single picture doesnt prove anything. Not enough evidence...

Foolish takedown by Hartman. I can see why he is so upset by it though as there is no way Montero scores and if Hartman just let him go KC might have survived. The offsides charge is equally ridiculous from the video and the entire KC staff needs to apologize to the refs on that one.

Watch the video... he doesn't begin to fall until the right foot goes down, which is the instant captured in the photo.

    Not a dive, sorry.

Looks clear to me, and even if it weren't, I feel like we had two other takedowns in the box that should have resulted in PK's.

Fredy drew the foul, Seba nailed the PK. Great teamwork, boys.

Nice green glasses everyone. Nice Dive from Freddy. Set up Hartman perfectly. Great tactics. He deserves to get that call for his tactical awareness alone, nevermind we have one photo from a Sounders photographer that "proves" everything.

I believe the video does show (1) that Freddy had the keeper beat and (2) the keeper cleary did play Freddy and not the ball. Freddy did not dive (amazingly) but was taken down... The picture (opposite angle of the video) only supports this conclusion IMO.

It was an obvious dive and Freddy admitted
it, look at the picture again, he is on his
toes taking the dive before he gets to Hartmans
arm, diving all the way, he knows it,
Hartman knows it, if you don't thats okay
