Actor, philanthropist Sean Penn was presented the 2012 Peace Summit Award on April 25, 2012 at the 12th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Chicago. Penn was recognized for his efforts to rebuild and aid the victims of the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and for his ongoing advocacy for peace and human rights protection worldwide.
Each year, in addition to convening Nobel Laureates, the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates recognizes a high-profile personality who has made an outstanding contribution to international social justice and peace.
Penn attended the three day Summit, April 23-25, which included attendees from 17 countries and speakers such as:
- President Mikhail Gorbachev
- President Lech Wałęsa
- President Frederik Willem de Klerk
- President Jimmy Carter
The first World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates was held in 1999 at the suggestion of the Gorbachev Foundation.
Previous recipients of the Peace Summit Award have included Bono, lead singer of U2,for his long-lasting engagement in the campaign for debt cancellation in third world countries, and George Clooney and Don Cheadle (together as men of peace for 2007) for their work toward peace in Darfour.
