Commentary:
Philippine congressman-elect Manny Pacquiao cancelled a tentatively scheduled visit with controversial U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Democrat, Nevada).
The meeting was supposed to be held on Monday, June 7th. However, the newly-elected Sarangani representative chose to proceed to take a family vacation near Guadalajara, Mexico, according to the Associated Press.
It also appears that Pacquiao will no longer attend the bout between Richie Mepranum (22-2-1) of Sarangani province, and Julio Cesar "Pingo" Miranda (31—5-1) for the WBO flyweight title on Saturday in Puebla, Mexico. Instead, Pacquiao will leave for the Philippines on Friday.
Controversial >
The cancellation saved Pacquiao's goodwill in the eyes of many in the U.S. It was also a fortunate turn given that the Democratic Party has stirred angry sentiments from U.S. voters. Most analysts expect a mass turnover in the coming November elections, with many prominent Democratic incumbents and candidates losing. Reid is facing several Republican opponents vying for his Senate seat given the political and economic climate in the United States.
Senator Harry Reid, who represents the state of Nevada, wanted to get political points in the press by posing for pictures with the popular Pacquiao. Nevada has many fight fans, and a photo-op with Manny Pacquiao would have bolstered his position in the November elections. Reid, a staunch Democrat, is projected to lose even in a liberal-leaning state adjacent to California. No photo-op with a popular fighter, however, can sugarcoat Harry Reid's failings as a Senate majority leader.
Harry Reid has racked up his recent share of controversy, and his stewardship in the Senate is fuelling a conservative, Tea Party movement in the U.S. His opposition advocates lower taxes, reductions in government spending, limits on government powers, control of the border, decreases in corruption and incompetency by officials and the federal government.
Earlier this year, it was disclosed that Reid made racist remarks toward then-presidential candidate Barack Obama, whom the Senator considered "light-skinned" and "with no Negro dialect" in private conversations.
Harry Reid is considered as one of the Democrat leaders in danger of losing his re-election bid later this year. Additionally, this November's election cycle is considered crucial for conservatives and Republicans in getting the nation, which is plagued by record-setting massive liabilities, back on track.

Bad Alliance >
Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, congressman Barney Frank, and Senator Chris Dodd have sparked outrage across the United States for a host of blunders.
Economists, analysts, academics, and Republicans forewarned that actions such as the 2009 stimulus package, which cost taxpayers over $800 billion, would do little to stimulate an economy afflicted with the worst recession since the Great Depression. The national unemployment rate is close to 10%. Reid's state of Nevada currently experiences its highest rate of unemployment in history. Without significant fiscal and government reforms, including cultural changes in Congress and the federal government, many warn that current government trajectory will bring eventual economic disaster to the country and Americans.
Since Democrats won over both houses of the U.S. Congress, government spending has been at record levels, the Obama Administration has refused to label "tax increases" as such, even though power and middle class families will pay more taxes when the Bush tax cuts expire. Record trade and government deficits now plague a weak economy.
A multi-trillion dollar healthcare bill was passed even though a majority of Americans opposed the measure. Corruption among Democratic officials have become part of the political conversation. The BP oil spill has magnified, and symbolized, the helplessness of the federal government to respond to energy-related environmental disasters. American voters have a collective anger at Congress for failing the American people.
Barack Obama is undergoing poor approval ratings after reversing his stance on several campaign promises, including his initial stance to oppose offshore drilling. Days after his supported the drilling measure popular with many Republicans as a way to reduce dependence on foreign oil, the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico ensued. The oil spill is now anticipated to be the worst in U.S. history. As of June 8, it is estimated that 36 million gallons of oil now liter the Gulf of Mexico.

Recession >
Harry Reid is considered a strong ally of Obama, and both advocated a $800+ billion stimulus bill that was passed in 2009. Many economists and Republicans vehemently warned Obama and the Democratic leadership that the expensive package would not work in stimulating the economy.
For instance, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Republican) advocated lower taxes for small business, lower taxes for households, as well as, a reduction in capital gains taxes in order to infuse fresh capital into U.S. markets, and to create jobs. Obama, Reid, Pelosi, and others instead passed an expensive stimulus bill, that over a year later, garners universal consensus that the $800 billion has not worked.
It is now viewed that the $800 billion, which was intended to stimulate the U.S. economy, has been partly siphoned off to local and regional supporters of the Democratic Party, a payola for their support during the 2008 elections. Many had opposed the bill as nothing more than an unnecessary spending measure. Common sense dictates that small business owners (in most cases) are the mass job creators in any economy, not the federal government. Statistics show that small and medium enterprises create over 95% of new jobs in the U.S. economy.
Arrogantly, Obama and the Democratic leadership spent $800 billion of the taxpayers' money to shore up their political support at regional levels, under the guise of economic stimulus. Pelosi and Reid led the effort in Congress.
Obama and Congress failed to significantly cut red tape and taxes for small business, and failed to extend the Bush tax cuts. Now, taxpayers are expected to pay at least 4% more in taxes.
Instead of funding innovation and jobs expansion, taxpayers are funding an inept government that is much less efficient in providing goods and services than the private sector. Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, and their congressional colleagues have also further institutionalized corruption and conflicts of interest at the local, state, and federal levels.
Estimates of waste in a multi-trillion dollar federal budget is pegged at between 5 - 15%, going to corruption or wasteful spending. To pass their controversial legislative initiatives, jobs, money, favors, and support were offered in exchange for votes. Obama offered positions in the executive branch in exchange for political favors.
During the elections, he positioned himself as a clean candidate. In passing the recent massive healthcare bill, congressional democrats unfairly directed federal spending to various representatives and senators in order to secure votes. To get Nebraska's vote, residents in that state pay lower healthcare bills than citizens in other states - strictly to secure a vote. Obama went against everything he campaigned for. Still, an inept and leftist media often shy away from probing inconsistencies between Democratic platforms and actual initiatives. Reporters, writers, and editors have also proven to be unreliable in bringing the political and economic debate to encompass sound economic and governance principles, focusing instead on sensationalism and "food fight" public arguments.
Waste >
Military contractors build needless weapons systems - which the Pentagon does not want, or consider essential - and deliver with delays, often at twice the cost. The cost-plus method guarantees large returns for the defense industry, and corrupts the political process, robbing taxpayers.
Unnecessary warships have an initial price tag of $250 million, but is delivered with an updated price tage of $500 million. Current law mandates honoring cost-plus. Books are cooked. Instead of fixing the widespread, industry-wide problem, the Democratic Congress (and Administration) have focused to spend even more. Government spending, to the benefit of contractors and vendors, benefit the Democratic Party who solicit funding support for future election cycles. Thus, as high voter anger is rejuvenating Republican opposition, Democrats are attempting to shore up their position by continuing to spend taxpayer dollars in the hopes of securing support from organized contractors.
Contractors receive massive sums after delivering a late, unwanted product - during times of economic distress. Democrats get campaign funds in return.
Reid, Pelosi, and Obama should take note such practice is not "change you can believe in." It is a stance of treason. Obama, who thinks highly of himself, and speaks eloquent hot air, lacking in substance or real world experience, promised the elimination of corrupt earmarks and pork barrel spending during the campaign. In passing his legislative agenda, the earmarks and pork barrel are still there. The recession is still there. Obama, and Reid, needed to have worked a real job sometime in their lives. Or perhaps run a real business. Government is not a business. Nevertheless, they continue to bankrupt it.
A highly liberal media supporting the Democratic bias serves to highlight the incompetence of writers, reporters, editors, and news purveyors in understanding the basic tenets of economics, finance, social leadership, and governance and ethics.
Common sense values and measures are tossed aside and / or attacked without due and proper assessment, but as automatic response from a misguided left. If you live in California, which is a state approaching bankruptcy, chances are over 50% of your paycheck goes to the local, state, and federal government. When is enough? In 2009, a record number of Americans renounced their citizenship and immigrated to another country.
Further, at a time of high tax rates, under distressing economic times, Obama and a Democratic Congress, led by Pelosi and Reid, passed a multi-trillion dollar healthcare bill.
Most Americans opposed the measure. States are now suing the new law as an unconstitutional expansion of federal power. The media was incapable of assessing the alarming increase in spending and expansion of federal power in the new law. Most provided cheap coverage at local, individual levels without the proper journalistic balance of analyzing the government checkbook. They would find federal bank accounts empty but riddled with trillions of dollars of debt.
Voter anger is magnified given that generational, entitlement liabilities (such as Medicare and Social Security) now stand at over $50 trillion, perhaps as high as $80 trillion. Virtually all credible analysis conclude that the country will be unable to fulfill these entitlement programs, even as they serve to increase taxes on future generations of American taxpayers. Not only are these spending initiatives look to be impossible under any fiscal projections, they can bring outright social chaos and economic apocalypse without material reforms to reduce the promised entitlement benefits.
Instead of being the leader he said he was, Obama chose to spend even more money - trillions worth. Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, and Frank do not understand that thinking is not the same as reality. Self-conceit is given. But no government or society can violate the timeless laws of economics and finance.
As Democrats face a motivated Republican Party in this year's elections, they will go into a battle led by a President that projected himself to be a change agent during the campaign. Two years of political record has shown him to be incompetent, and the worst American President since Jimmy Carter.
Obama shakes hands with dictators, and bows to Saudi royalty. He apologizes for America's strength. Obama stands soft in the face of Iran and North Korea. Obama has never held a real job, has never been tested. His presidency is weak and ushers disaster to his nation. The media likes him because he is African American. In a period in which race is no longer supposed to play a role in social governance, and that quality of character should be the governing test, Obama and the media play the race card. Disregarding bad policies.
His policies are anti-American.
The Obama Administration allowed Mexican President Felipe Calderon to speak before a joint session of Congress and scold the government, and the American people, on the recently-passed immigration law in Arizona. A foreign official spoke before Congress imploring it to stop enforcing U.S. laws. Arizona's new law clamps down on illegal immigration and implements tougher border security in a country that has over 12 million illegal immigrants. Democratic leaders allowed a foreign dignitary to scold its neighbor because a state wants to protect its borders. Would China, Russia, or any self-respecting country, ever allow 12+ million undocumented illegals to invade their borders? America does. But not only that, Democrats want the American people to be scolded for wanting their borders secured, their sovereignty respected.
November Elections >
In November, Democrats are supposed to acknowledge that its $800 billion stimulus bill has failed to re-invigorate the economy. Instead, expect word plays that are nothing short of lies to the American people.
Democrats have increased government spending and deficits to record levels. Raised taxes on stressed U.S. taxpayers. Encouraged companies to relocate overseas. Its soft, apologetic stance on tyranny overseas has only served to embolden America's enemies. Democrats spent hundreds of billions of dollars to bail out corporations that, with their actions, only served to undermine and destablize the U.S. and global economy. A Democratic administration openly advocates not enforcing U.S. laws when it comes to illegal immigration and border security.
The Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, Frank alliance advocates expanding government imprint on society despite government's higher levels of inefficiencies and corruption. The private sector is seen as the enemy. The small business owner is punished. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sees the American worker as the enemy, lusting for his hard-earned paycheck. Democrats have declared war on the American people, and are ushering in a future era of economic collapse.
This attitude lacks trust and faith in the individual, and takes cash away from the distressed taxpayer. It is, however, taxpayers who create jobs, who are in the best position to know how to invest and spend their precious financial resources.
Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, and Frank have lacked having a real job or having run a real business in the real world. Thus, they legislate with a mantle of arrogance thinking they know more than everyone else. They are flawed theorists, not practitioners. Their ideas fail in practice because they have specialized in winning elections, not in living the life of an average American. Of an average American worker. Of a small business owner. They can start a company and watch it crash to the ground. Pelosi and Reid are used to having guaranteed revenue since they are lifelong politicians. That is how they, including Obama, are running the country. They are electioneers, not job creators.
Harry Reid stands to lose this November, even as his opponents are encircling his maligned and misdirected stewardship of the U.S. Senate. It is not only time, but the damage his party has caused will take tremendous effort, time, and some luck, to reverse. Obama should take note of Reid's upcoming electoral loss, because he too has failed his constituents - more miserably than any recent President.

you don't get it do you Marv?
Manny Pacquiao is the complete opposite of you. He is a liberal. In fact he is a "bleeding heart" liberal. Because of the life he and his fellow neighbors have lived, he is closer to socialistic than you would be comfortable admitting. He would hate you as one of the heartless elite turning their backs on the poor in his neighborhood. What the heck happened to you Marv???? You are a dissapointment to those people in all the neighborhoods like Pacquiao's...you made it in America and turned your back on the people. Pacquiao went into politics to fight heartless conservatives exactly like you...I don't understand how you can "honor" Pacquiao while spewing rhetoric that he is now fighting....look at the man in the mirror dude....seriously look at the man in the mirror and really get to know what he has become because Pacquiao would not be proud to know him.
UMAYOS AYOS NG KONTI AH...
As Marley once wrote, ask Marv Dumon the time and he will make you a watch. This guy still doesn't get it. Will somebody please summarize (ho..hum..) this article for some of us readers.
Good move for Pacman. If it was Obama he would never cancel the meeting.
Funny thing is, Marv's article does speak truth. It's not a matter of Democrats bad and Republicans good. Things just haven't worked out in the US economy.
Point your fingers, and figure out who to blame. Whatever. But the bottom line is this... THE ECONOMY IS STILL BROKEN.
Dumon is attacking the Democrats with left and right blows to the head and body and hitting below the belts too. Dumon is a firm believer in GWB, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Condo Rice,,,Limbaugh, McCain, Palin, etc....
Congressman Pacquiao.....,wazzup?!
What's wrong with you Mr. Writer???This is a boxing site not a political blogs...You are using my beloved Pacman to induce readers to read your nonsense blog...Are you on something???
Who are you to know the right policies for America???Are you an expert of government policy making???what are your credentials???
You look so funny Mr. Writer...
I think Marv is 100% right. Someone had to say it. The truth hurts. There's this saying. All truth passes through 3 stages. First it is ridiculed.Second it is violently opposed.Third, it is accepted as being self evident.
Seems like a lot of people responding to Marv's article are ridiculing the truth. That's good eventually everyone will have no choice but to accept it as self evident. The faster the better.
I hope my fellow Americans wake up and realize that spending more money than we can print and writing checks we can't cash is going to further bankrupt an already distressed economy.
How is spending trillions of dollars on a healthcare bill going to help get this economy going? Obama needs to take it one day at a time one thing at a time. Fix the economy first than see if you can make healthcare work. STOP SPENDING MONEY.
Encourage small businesse to weather the storm with tax cuts not higher taxes. Like a bumbersticker I saw recently.I'll keep my money & guns u can keep the ch
Invitation was inappropriate. Pacman wasn't in America for political reasons and not yet attended even for one day in Philippine congress. If they didn't made the invitation public, both could have avoided somewhat a feel of embarassment. Pacquiao is very approachable person but also sensitive, Floyd's harsh accusation was a proof.
marv, your story is becoming better and longer than ever. Its a slam dunk for today!
Are you sure that there was an invitation that hasbeen turn down? Are you sure that Manny cancelled the meeting?
I don't think it is a right move for Pacman to snub an invitation from an elected senator. You have to be accurate in your statement, Mr writer. Because no matter how right is the intention of Pacman, he has to respect somebody, and anybody is innocent until proven from any wrong doing.
Aquino, 15th President of the Philippines
In the final tally, Aquino garnered 15,208,678 votes against closest rival, former president Joseph Estrada, who got 9,487,837 votes or a difference of 5,720,841 votes.
The vice presidential race had been a toss-up between Binay and Senator Manuel Mar Roxas II throughout the entire canvassing in Congress.
In the final tally, Binay got 14,645,574 votes as against the 13,918,490 votes of Roxas.
Congratulations Noy, Jojo and Manny.

The prevailing economic and political situation in the USA is an offshoot of the bad policies and initiatives of the previous administration which resulted in untold suffering to Americans and the crippling of the vast majority of businesses in the country. The situation proved to be so complicated that no one was certain of the right remedy. Economists were divided as to what measures were needed to be done to arrest the decline and bring back the economy to normalcy. The stimulus package, remember, was initiated by Bush, a Republican, and continued by Obama who thought that by increasing the amount of the package and widening the coverage, the country could be pumped up much faster thereby shortening the suffering of businesses and the people. Surely its beneficial effect made its impact (e.g. the car industry) but because of the severity of the situation, naturally full normalcy will come much later. I think that Marred is a Republican fanatic and a poor loser. Bye Dumb-on.
Dumon, Stay out of politics. First if you do join the political fights know what you are talking about. The $800B stimulus package was approved by George Bush. The problem that is supposed to be fixed was caused by Wallstreet mis-steps/corruption in wallstreet under the watchful eye of Republicans for 8 years! You also exposed yourself on this article. We don't know that you are a REPUBLICAN!?
Now, you are getting political Marv.
That is typical filipino trait. Like Pacquiao, filipinos are Jack of all trades, master of none, we know everything and wants to do everything.
Meeting with Senator Reid is not that important. Manny should have been invited by Nancy Pelosi in Congress for a speech. Anyway, Manny is a congressman as a way of parity.
Photo op with Manny will not help the democrats for we have an incompetent administration.
As Obama is all talk, Pacquiao is all action.
We need more of Pacquiao in Congress. How about Buboy, is he ripe for congress too.
Voted 2010 Billiards Player of the Decade, simple and soft-spoken Reyes is truly a source of inspiration to the whole nation even though he was a school dropout (Bata could only finish second year in high school due to financial constraints).

Marv, this is a marvelous article!
I'm extremely happy that Manny cancelled his meeting with Reid. Harry Reid is the Mayweather Jr. here in the US politics. We need to vote out all incumbents in both senate and congress this coming November. Otherwise, with the full implementation of the recently passed healthcare in 2014 and the uncontrolled massive Obama expenditures coupled will eventually result to hyper inflation.
In yesterday's news, the Obama admin is already contemplating a 40% offshore oil tax increase which, according to some experts, will result to a $4 to $5 gas price.
Spend and tax is the name of the game by this current admin.
California and some other states are now in the verge of bankruptcy just like Greece, Argentina, etc.
Joke of the day, I hope that this writers understand that we are talking about a USA Senator an ruler of the world by consent

Obviously, this writer is a Republican, writing his opinion using Pacquiao's name as an eye-catcher.
I do not mind the political talk on this site for a bit. For those who are questioning that Marv is be a Republican have to look at the facts. Obama's approval rating is going down and goes the same for the rest of the Democrats. The country is in debt $13 TRILLION because of all these bailouts, stimulus package that did not help the economy, and that damn health care bill. But I bet most of the left will still blame that on Bush like their dear president.
My point being, it is not just Republicans that are starting to turn their backs on the party in power. Independents and even democrats do not like the direction this country is headed.
"Good Job" Mr.Dumon it's good to know that you are concern whats going on here not only in boxing, this current administration is keeping blaming former Pres. Bush, Obama is in office for 18 months in the office but he already doubled the debt. People doesn't know that future generation all our children and grand children is already on debt. I feel bad for the people who can still not get it for the love of Obama. It's not for Republican or Democrat anymore it's for the sake of our country/ people. Next year will be worse more taxes when Bush tax cut expired.
Mr. Dumon explained it accurate and very informative. Thank you

The question of how much oil is leaking has been crucial from Day 1 of the crisis. Since BP is liable for every barrel spilled, its estimates have been viewed with skepticism and even ridicule. A NOAA flow-rate group eventually raised the original BP estimate of 5,000 barrels per day, placing it between 12,000 and 19,000 barrels a day. Others have said it's really more, perhaps as much as 30,000 barrels per day
"Drill Baby Drill"
At the higher end of government estimates, nearly 40 million gallons of oil have escaped, four times that of the Exxon Valdez. BP could incur fines of up to $4,800 per barrel of oil that's escaped. BP says it simply does not know the true extent of the leaking oil. "How much that is, we'd all love to know," Kent Wells, a BP executive, told reporters Monday. "It's really difficult to tell."
This article is truly idiotic...
This is a long read but did not prevent me from reading it to the end. You have full knowledge of the facts about how America is changing. I give you credit for knowing facts that the mainstream media is not reporting (hiding). I'm a Pacquiao fan who, if given a choice, would advice him to stay away from politics if possible, but would support all his endeavors. But please, advice him to keep his political interest and views at home.

A second vessel that will arrive within days is expected to greatly boost capacity. BP also plans to bring in a tanker from the North Sea to help transport oil and an incinerator to burn off some of the crude.

Pres. Obama should step down if he still has little respect left on him.
If Obozo makes it for a second term we will see the demise of the United States. I truely believe it is his objective to ruin this nation. This is not about race but a man who either has no idea on what is going on or is hell bent on the destruction of my country. PS: I voted for him in 2008
This is the most dumbest thing I've read in a long time. Don't believe what you see and hear in the media. President Obama is facing more crisis than any I've seen in 50+ years and he stays focused and in tuned with the average American and there are billions who will stand by his efforts against stupid 'I can't even speak the language' idiots. And I am very proud to be one of them. Now go crack an english dictionary.
Good move by Manny. I wouldnt be caught dead with an evil Democrat
lol Pinoys are taking a swipe at me...President OBAMA !
how dare you pinoys !!!
You gotta be kidding me? The so called 'political' points made in this diatribe are nothing but ill-informed personal point of view. As to the idiots that agree with him, especially you Walt, if you really believe that your duly elected President has the destruction of the US as his main agenda, it's time to head to Canada... leave the country, stop your bitching. We can do well without you.
