The Washington Huskies soccer women went up to Capitol Hill on early Friday evening and came away from Championship Field with a 1:0 victory over the SeattleU Redhawks.

Dale Garvey was on hand and shares the photos below from the match.

“I am not disappointed and I think it was a great home opener for us, in terms of quality competition,” said SeattleU head coach Julie Woodward to the school website.. “UW is great and experienced team. I think that looking at this current team compared to last year, I feel like we have made some great strides.”

“It was a tough game that could have gone either way. We created some opportunities for ourselves which was exciting to see. I think we were a bit more dynamic offensively and we defended well. They scored one great goal, which is a bummer, but I am happy with our overall play,” concluded the veteran coach.

The match winner

It couldn't have been a better game or moment for Kellye Joswick to return to the field. The redshirt senior from Placentia, Calif., scored the lone goal in the 78th minute as the Huskies defeated Seattle University, 1-0, at Championship Field to open the season for both teams. It was the second-straight season UW opened up with a win over Seattle.

Joswick missed all of 2009 after a season-ending ACL tear in the fourth minute of the season-opener vs. Seattle. After working hard in the offseason to get back to the field, she got the start and took a ball from Sarah Martinez to the far post for the goal.

"Going in I was super nervous but just really excited to get on the field," Joswick told GoHuskies.com. "Our team did a really good job. It was a team effort getting the ball up the field and it happened really fast. Sarah (Martinez) played a ball through a player's legs and I struck it in the far post."
