This is an informative video from Howcast that shows how anyone can recycle an old belt and turn it into a pet collar. While pet collars are generally inexpensive, the idea of repurposing a belt is a great way to help reduce the amount of waste that eventually ends up in landfills. The project doesn’t require many supplies and can easily be accomplished in less than an hour. One point made in the video that was interesting, is not to use leather belts, as leather may shrink when it becomes wet. The video recommended using organic materials for your choice.
Basically, you take an old belt, measure your dog’s neck and add several inches to the length. Leave the belt buckle in place and round off the opposite, cut end so you can ensure an easy, secure fit.
This is just one idea for making your own dog or cat collars. You will find there are plenty of online tutorials that will provide plenty of ideas for creating other collars. Those who sew have access to countless dog and cat collar patterns that will not only keep Fido and FiFi looking great, but could be turned into a side business.
