On August 17, 2012, NBC announced they would air an exclusive, one-on-one interview with homeschooled, Olympic athlete Gabby Douglas following her stunning gold medal win in the London, Summer Olympics. Douglas will speak to Lester Holt for an episode of “Dateline” that will air on Sunday, August 19, 2012 where the 16-year-old gymnast will discuss life after winning the all-around Olympic gold medal, her new multi-million dollar endorsement deals, and how her life has changed from the experience. The news show will also feature behind-the-scenes footage of Douglas and her home life. Douglas walked away from the Olympics with two, gold medals.
Though many Olympians have interesting stories that detail their struggles, strengths, and trials for reaching their dreams, Douglas’ biography has a more serious note. At the age of 14, Douglas moved away from her home and siblings in Virginia to travel to West Des Moines, Iowa, where she lived with the Parton family for training. While living with the Partons, Douglas embarked upon a homeschooling curriculum to ensure she had plenty of time to devote to her gymnastics training. Douglas’ coach is the renowned trainer Liang Chow.
When Lester Holt asked how life has changed since winning gold, Douglas stated, “Things changed instantly. I remember just, like Twitter and I had gained, like, so many followers. And I was just so happy. Me and my mom went shopping and everyone was just, like, "Oh, hey, that's Gabby. That's Gabby." So I'm just gonna enjoy it and soak it in.”
Douglas also stated that meeting Jordin Sparks and Nicki Minaj have been the best part of her notoriety. Dateline airs on Sundays at 7 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. CT on NBC.
