Chasing celebrities to snap photos is multi-million dollar business, but one photographer who was chasing after a photo of what he thought was Justin Bieber sitting in a parked car lost his life on Tuesday, Jan. 1, CNN reported. The photographer, returning to his car, was struck by oncoming traffic as he crossed a Los Angeles freeway.
One photo of Justin Bieber can net photographers hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. But Bieber was not even in the white Ferrari at the time of the New Year’s Day tragedy.
California Highway Patrol officers had pulled over Bieber’s vehicle on Tuesday evening at an off-ramp on Interstate 405. The photographer spotted the Ferrari, proceeded to park his own vehicle across the street, crossed Interstate 405 and took photos of the car’s occupants, said Los Angeles spokesman James Stoughton.
Reportedly California Highway Patrol officers told the man twice to return to his car. As the man crossed back across the 405 he was struck by a car. Authorities have not yet released the photographer’s name.
Justin Bieber issued this statement after hearing of the incident:
“While I was not present nor directly involved with this tragic accident, my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim. Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officere, innocent public bystanders and the photographers themselves."
