This weekend (November 19th-21st) marks the 10th Anniversary of Mark Kurtz Photography, a very personal gallery with an extensive range of landscape subjects that is a must see on your next trip to Saranac Lake.
Adirondack Photographer Mark Kurtz was one of the original members of the Adirondack Artists Guild that bloomed in this amazing little arts town that now features more than 30 artists, two arts collectives, a regional theatre, and more than 20 individual art studios.
After three years as an active member of the Guild, Mark moved into his own studio just a few blocks away at 36 Broadway, Saranac Lake—where he can often be found chatting with customers or other artists. This unique place is a cozy space that serves as a gallery of Kurtz’s extensive landscape work available for sale, and a studio for the strong commercial business he has run for 23 years, featuring clients such as Adirondack Life Magazine, Skiing Magazine, Skidmore College, and the Adirondack Nature Conservancy.
This Friday, November 19th, the Mark Kurtz Photography Gallery celebrates 10 years in this location, with a reception from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, followed by an open house all weekend, from Saturday from 10 AM to 7PM and Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Kurtz has been one of the official photographers for the Olympic Regional Development Authority of Lake Placid, specializing in glorious aerial photography over the original Lake Placid Olympic Sports Complex and the mountains beyond, as well as action photography of the sporting events themselves.
Kurtz’s personal preference is to work in black and white, capturing urban locations as well as the Northern Adirondacks he calls home. This opening weekend marks a change in which Kurtz will be giving a glimpse into his color work with a few large scale panoramic landscape prints of the Adirondacks. His sepia and black & white photos will remain the predominant work on display at his gallery.
Much of his work is still done on film, which he feels captures the range of grays that are so interesting in the settings, such as the subjects in the new exhibit, “Bridges I Have Crossed,” all of which can be seen on the North Country Public radio website gallery page. Where most Adirondack photographers explore the rich color that so permeates the natural environment, Kurtz brings it all down to soft subtle tones that create a timeless quality.
This weekend is a great time to get to see his work first hand, and to look for really special gift ideas—and Kurtz is so affable he makes it a pleasure to visit: “I'm really looking for an excuse for a party and that is what we'll have next Friday at the gallery,” he says.
