The Photo Safety Program begins again today in Jackson, but only warning notices will be given out for the next 30 days to those who run red lights at the intersections where the cameras are installed.
Earlier this year, the City of Jackson entered into a contract with Redflex Traffic Systems Incorporated to install equipment and support the Jackson Police Department in the operation of its Photo Safety Program, according to a release from the department.
The program is part of JPD’s ongoing efforts to insure that the roadways in Jackson are as safe and efficient as possible.
Engineering studies were completed by an independent engineering firm, Neel-Schaffer Inc., and two intersections- North Highland Avenue (US 45) at Old Hickory Boulevard and North Highland Avenue at Carriage House Drive/Ridgecrest Road- were selected to have photo enforcement equipment installed at this time.
The release said the installation and testing were completed three days ahead of schedule and operation of the equipment begins today. During the first 30-days (Nov. 28 through Dec. 27), only warning notices will be mailed to those motorists who run red lights at the aforementioned intersections. Actual notices of violation will begin being sent to red light runners on Dec. 29.
As it has been since the Photo Safety Program began operating in September of 2006, the civil penalty for a Photo Safety Program notice of violation for running a red light will continue to be fifty-dollars. Just like with a parking ticket, the registered owner of the vehicle is civilly liable and no points are ever placed on anyone’s driving record.
The release said so far this year in Jackson, there have been 1,402 intersection crashes, which are some of the most dangerous crashes. A significant number of these crashes are caused by red light runners. The Photo Safety Program is one more tool to combat these crashes and prevent unnecessary deaths and injuries.
