Early Monday morning, a rock slide closed I-70 between Glenwood Canyon, Denver and Southern Utah indefinitely. I-70 has been closed between Glenwood Springs and Dotsero, Colorado. The detour around the road closure is about 150 miles. The road has been closed in both directions. This is the main road that is used from Denver into Southern Utah.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reported that the massive rockslide created half a dozen large holes in the road, and pushed some of the road barriers off the road. Both westbound and eastbound lanes have been severely damaged. Some of the boulders that fell are larger than cars. In one area there is a 5 x 5 foot hole in the ground and another hole is an estimated 10 x 20 feet (see photo link below).
CDOT estimates that almost 20,000 vehicles travel that road each day. In 2004, on Thanksgiving Day a rockslide occurred in this same area, but mainly in the westbound lane. CDOT was able to open one lane within 31 hours while the road took two months to repair. CDOT is trying to determine how long repairs will take in this case.
