Photo gallery: 2011 American Cup

Looking back, the 2011 American Cup goes down as one of the most exciting of its kind. The Cup has often been a starmaking competition, especially for Americans -- it launched Mary Lou Retton in 1983, Carly Patterson in 2003, Nastia Liukin in 2005, Shawn Johnson in 2007 and Jordyn Wieber, who also won the women's title this year, back in 2009.

It has also been a meet that has tended to favor U.S. gymnasts over stronger and weaker international competition. This year's field in both the men's and women's competition was among the best ever, mostly thanks to the meet's new status as an FIG World Cup all-around competition, one of four to be held at various points around the globe this year.

Anyways, here's a photo gallery! Gymnastics photographer Melissa Perenson traveled to Florida for this year's American Cup, and has generously shared her photos of the meet with Examiner.com.

While in Florida, Melissa also shot the Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup, and photos from that event will be posted tomorrow, as well as a list of routines to watch.
