Mattie Larson captivates on floor. Photo/Greg Long
Mattie Larson has often captivated, but she's rarely won. In 2008, she was considered too inexperienced to be on the Olympic team, despite showstopping performances on floor exercise at the Olympic Trials. Since then, many fans have been waiting for her to come into her own.
They've had a long wait. A leg injury ended her Olympic bid in 2008. One bad tumbling pass at the end of a workout at a national team camp ended her bid to be part of th World Championship team in 2009.
But on Saturday night in Chicago, Larson, 18, proved that she has more to give, winning the all-around despite falling on her beam dismount on her first event of the night.
Larson's next test will be the U.S. Championships in Hartford, Conn. Aug. 10-14. Enjoy the gallery below of images of Larson from Saturday night's competition in Chicago, provided by photographer Greg Long.
