Photo by Kevin Gill depicts Mars as a shining blue marble (Video)

What would Mars look like if it had water and was green? A new photo by an American software engineer provides Earthlings a view of how the fourth planet from the sun would appear if it sustained life.

Using his own knowledge as well as topographical data from NASA to create the amazing 3D model of Earth’s neighbor, Kevin Gill depicts Mars as a blue marble with water, a lot of land, both brown and green, and an ocean.

Gill made the photo utilizing GIMP, a painting software, and finished the model using several steps, such as applying a three-dimensional cloud layer, inserting an atmosphere and adding inspirations from Earth, like the Sahara Desert and the rainforests of South America.

“This wasn’t intended as an exhaustive scientific scenario as I’m sure (and expect) some of my assumptions will prove incorrect,” wrote Gill on Google+. “I’m hoping at least to trigger the imagination, so please enjoy!”

The image was released last week and has generated a tremendous amount of buzz on the Internet. It has been shared throughout the social media landscape thousands of times.
