Brooke Magnanti, a cancer specialist in London led a secret life as a call girl and blogged about it until it became a hit TV series. The New York Times ran an exclusive interview with Brooke Magnanti on Sunday. No one knew that Brooke Magnanti was the call girl in the blog until she told a British newspaper.
Brooke Magnanti, 34 was the writer behind "Belle de Jour," the online diary of a high class call girl.
"It feels so much better on this side. Not to have to tell lies, hide things from the people I care about," the 34-year-old wrote on her blog after the Sunday Times interview ran.
Magnanti's writings show the side of a call girl who had a huge following on her blog, a book deal, and a hit TV series about her life. In 2003, Magnanti became a call girl to support herself while she completed her doctorate. She said that she realized she didn’t have a problem about being paid for sex. She found a local agency and worked as a prostitute until late 2004. In her blog she described it more enjoyable than her job as a computer programmer.
The London public became fascinated with her experiences that were sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and sometimes disgusting. The hit TV series "Secret Diary of a Call Girl," starred actress Billie Piper.
Magnanti ‘retired’ from her call girl life in 2004, and moved on to began working as a cancer specialist. She broke her silence and came forward with her identity when she feared an ex-boyfriend would reveal her story. She said that friends and colleagues have been amazingly supportive. She also mentioned that there was an incredible curiosity about if she paid taxes, and she assured everyone that she had.
Prostitution is a nationwide issue that many states face. Some women enter into it willingly, and some are forced into it by men who have a group of women performing for them. There is a current case in Utah about man who was arrested in September for forcing several women to become prostitutes. He kidnapped his victims by knife point or stun gun and forced them into prostitution in several states until they escaped.
