Max Phoenix and I were distant friends who always treated each other with respect and whenever we saw each other we shared a smile and a hug. We also shared in our journey to stay clean and sober and it came as a surprise to so many when he chose such a desperate escape.
As an addict I understand what it feels like to live your life in multiple states of a roller coaster ride. I remember the lows as vividly as the highs and I know what it feels like to see my life prosper and crumble beneath the weight of my addictions.
I’ve seen so many friends fall to this desease and I still see friends falling and it breaks my heart to say goodbye to someone who seemed so strong. Max will be missed by many and his energy and spirit lives on in the community he supported.
Farewell my fair weather friend, we were brothers in our struggle and I commend you on your journey in life and wish you peace in your passing. There are some among us who will be forever changed by your absence and brought to the harsh reality of their own mortality. I don’t agree with the choice that you made, but I hope others will be reminded of the risks their taking and make the right choices.
