The Pioneers’ Cemetery Association is proud to announce the Historic Walk in Phoenix's Oldest Cemeteries Tours will be back for its 5th exciting year! The history walk is held in the spring and fall weather months and has become a popular program in the lineup of events held at old cemetery grounds and Smurthwaite House in downtown Phoenix.
The March 2013 ‘Historic Walk in Phoenix’s Oldest Cemeteries Tour’ is slated for Saturday, March 23rd, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Costumed reenactment players will be on hand to talk about the lives of some of Phoenix’s earliest pioneers. Each tour is unique and carries a different theme. The March 2013 tour will focus on some of the doctors of early Phoenix who met early or untimely deaths. Come and meet Early Phoenix Physicians!
Guests receive a little bit of a history lesson and a big helping of great entertainment as the tour guides lead groups of visitors through some of Phoenix’s first cemeteries. There are 8 different cemeteries that make up this historic complex. The March 2013 tour features Rosedale, Porter, Masons, K of P and City Cemetery.
The Historic Walk in Phoenix’s Early Cemeteries is an affair the entire family can enjoy together. The March cast members are local Valley residents who volunteered their acting skills to entertain at the cemetery event.
Meet Our Cast of “Dearly Departed Doctors”
Dr. James H. Gentry 1855-1905 Gentry was a Phoenix allopath physician. He started his medical practice in Phoenix in 1904. He became ill in 1905 and died three months later.
Dr. Alfred H Graham 1830-1885 Graham discovered dinosaur fossils in Texas. He began a medical practice in Phoenix in 1884 and was an ex Confederate soldier.
Dr. Scott Helm 1861-1897 Helm learned his surgical skills in Maine. He answered all medical calls whether he was paid or not and became Arizona’s State Surgeon General. Hear about his tragic death after a local parade.
Dr. Joshua A Miller Jr. 1846-1901 Miller worked in the early Arizona Territory insane asylum in 1892. He also had a great interest in the study of the prehistoric villages of Arizona.
Dr. Richard T Osborne 1856-1890 Osborne began his practice in Phoenix in 1882. He suffered a nervous disorder and one day committed a horrifying deed.
Dr. John L Walker 1853-1894 Walker came to Phoenix in 1892 and was very popular with his friends and patients. His funeral was widely attended and boasted a large procession to the cemetery.
Dr. Jacob H Way 1841-1887 Way headed west to Arizona in 1886 in hopes of prolonging his own life as well as others. He was an active Mason and lived near the Salt River.
Dr. Albert F Wineman 1869-1903 Wineman was one of Phoenix’s first dentists. He suffered from consumption and came to work in Arizona in hopes of recovery. Hear an emotional tribute read at his funeral.
