Phoenix man axes son to death: Gary Sherrill says 13-year-old son was a 'demon'

Gary Reagan Sherrill appeared before a judge Wednesday after being arrested on New Year’s Eve. Officers say he told them he believed his son was a demon and used an axe to kill him.

Gary Reagan Sherrill’s story as to why he repeatedly swung an ax into his 13-year-old son on New Year’s Day is as sickening as it is disturbed. According to Fox News on Friday, Sherrill believed his son was a demon and was afraid his son would eat him.

Sherrill’s ex-wife reported her son, David Sebastian Sherrill, as missing after her ex failed to bring him back after picking him up the previous day. The two shared joint custody of David, from the time they divorced in 2010.

According to Fox News, divorce court paperwork does not indicate that Sherrill suffered from any known mental problems, only stating: “The father is unemployed and this has likely impacted his mental state,” reported.

A neighbor of Sherrill commented on the foreboding property on Bethany Home Road and 10th Street where the 51-year-old lived by himself.

“I know that all the windows were blacked out with tin foil. I never saw the child playing whenever he was let out of the house… he had a tight hold on him. In the beginning, I kind of thought he might be kidnapped,” the neighbor said.

“The mother of the child was down here and crying and screaming and inconsolable obviously,” said Divina West, another neighbor. “I feel horribly for the mother who I witnessed when they told her the news and heard her gut wrenching scream. That is just something that will stay with me forever.”

Neighbors also said that when Sherrill was arrested, he too was screaming, yelling about war and other gibberish.

On Thursday, neighbors lit candles in front of the home where the teen was murdered. MyFoxPhoenix says those closest to the family were too distraught to say much about the teen, but said off-camera that David was a sweet, kind boy.

Sherrill is being held on a $1 million bond and is due back to court next week.
