It was the Jets first real test of the pre-season and they struggled in the early going as Wellington controlled the match and the tempo.
It took just four minutes for Wellington to get a sight of goal as Joel Stevens ran through to pick up Taylor Regan's pass and found Carlos Hernandez who could only find the post.
That was only a temporary respite as Ben Sigmund was left wide open in the seventh minute enabling him to head home Henandez's corner for the opening goal.
The Jets looked to attack right after that and newarly had an equalizer straight away as Michael Bridges chipped Glen Moss but watched his shot sail over the bar.
Newcastle kept on trying to find a goal and in the 13th minute James Virgili found Bridges at the top of the box but he couldn't keep his volley down as it sailed over the bar.
The Jets thought they'd hit the lead in the 16th minute as Joey Gibbs headed home but saw his effort chalked off due to a foul in the build up.
It was all Newcastle but the next incident came on a Wellington attack after a late boot from Paul Ifil caught Jets keeper Mark Birighitti causing a scuffle and earning the Barabos international a yellow card.
Newcastle continued to attack and the Wellington defense looked to be in trouble but time and time again poor finishing cost the Jets dearly.
Despite that Wellington still had their chances and in the 32nd minute Stein Huysegems hit an impressive strike that Birighitti was equally impressive to get to to deny the Phoenix.
After the break both teams came out to play with the Jets looking impressive as they continued to pepper the goal with shots.
Both keepers were kept on their toes thoughout the second half but they impressed as they made a number of crucial impressive saves through the stretch.
The Jets worked hard to try and find an equalizer but unfortunately for them they were unable to find a goal despite their constant attack as they fell to a 1-0 loss.
