The Tubes, a San-Francisco-based rock band, led by the outrageous, never boring and always fabulous Fee Waybill, captivated and entertained the heck out of audiences in the ‘70s and early ‘80s with their shows that were more production pieces than concerts. With numerous costumes, cast members, massive set pieces and their own satirical commentary on media, politics, and pop culture through the music and skits, attending a Tubes show was no ordinary concert – it was an experience. Songs like “Sushi Girl,” and “White Punks On Dope” when preformed live, were massive in scale and production, earning the band the bragging rights as one of the most entertaining live acts ever.

The band found wide commercial success in the early ‘80s, first with 1981’s “Talk To Ya later,” a personal favorite of mine and then even more commercially successful was 1983’s “She’s A Beauty,” an awesome song with a great video featuring Waybill as a carnival-hawking showman.

Something fans may not know, is that while the band does hail from the Bay area, the founding members of the Tubes first met as high school students right here in the Valley, in Phoenix and Scottsdale. After forming bands separately that both moved to the Bay area, the groups eventually merged and became the band we know as The Tubes.

Over the years there have been members that have come and gone from the band, including the charismatic Waybill. Today, the band including founding members Fee Waybill and Prairie Prince are going strong, although not touring heavily right now, so the chance to see them live while they are here in April should not be missed.
