Phoenix Comicon has officially started and it looks and feels bigger than ever, and this was only preview night.
Ticketing was done at the South building this year so that meant doing some walking in the heat, but not too bad overall. Having water stations outside is a welcome addition, and will be in a lot of demand with the addition of the Street Pavillion this year along 3rd street. Tip, No lanyards this year, so bring your own if you don't want to pin your badge to your shirt, or costume.
There were quite a few vehicles on display outside of the convention, including the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Van, Bumblebee in Car mode, and much more.
Getting into the hall was well easy, and the event staff a good job preventing a mad rush to the doors. Not an easy feat considering how many people were waiting for the doors to open at 4pm.
This examiner was able to get a few things signed by the legendary writer of The Uncanny X-Men, Chris Claremont. Chris had a steady line so if you are planning to get anything signed by him, do plan to be there a while, as it took about 90 minutes before I was able to meet him. He was very gracious and talkative with everyone. Lots of key X-Men books getting signed. FYI: Chris Claremont does charge for signatures. Signatures are $5 each, or $10 each if its for CGC.
After that it was off to see the awesome April Grady-Reyna, at booth 1746 who had an awesome Arrow sketch cover for me. Check the slideshow for a picture of it. Hoping to get that signed by Stephen Amell as well. If you are into sketch covers, April has many other great sketch covers available for sale. Also be sure to check out Jason Worthington at 1833, as he has some great covers available as well.
The next stop was to hit up the Test Subjects booth at AA29, AA30, AA31, AA32. You will notice a lot of these folks artwork on this years badges, and they have limited prints available of the badge art at their tables. Be sure to check them out. Lots of prints, sketches cards, sketch covers, and more available from these folks. Their Test Subjects Star Wars homage prints are sure to be big hits.
The last thing this examiner was able to hit before calling a night, was the Dark Horse Comics at booth 535. So many goodies here. Dark Horse has signings planned all weekend long starting on Friday. Stop by their booth to get a schedule, and get some of their awesome swag. They even have lanyards for your event badge.
Looking forward to day 2.
