It's Philo Vance day on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) with 6 different Vance's available for viewing.
In all there were 15 Vance films: An even dozen based on the writing of Vance creator S.S. Van Dine, which were made between 1929-40. Another 3 were written by others especially for the screen and they were all released in 1947.

Mainly an author of critical books about the various arts, William Huntington Wright created Vance after a convalescene spent intensively studying crime and detection. Under his penname S.S. Van Dine he published the first of the Vance mysteries, "The Benson Murder Case," in Scribner's Magazine with the title soon published in book form in 1926.
