A Philadelphia Police Officer was shot once in the head early today, August 19, 2014 as he tried to investigate a male . The officer, Stephen Korpalski,suffered a graze wound to his head. He is back home with his family. The suspect is dead,police said. The incident happened during the early morning hours along the 6400 block of Ditman street, where officers responded to a call for shots fired. The cops were provided with a description of the suspect.
At Torresdale and Magee, Korpalski and his partner, who were patrolling in a Police Van saw a male matching that description. as they approached him, the suspect pulled a gun and fired a shot , just as the officer got out of the van. He had been shot once to his head. It was a graze wound, but he did not know that yet. He returned fire and so did his partner.
As other cops arrived, they saw the suspect running down Torresdale Ave and they opened fire on him. "He was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m". Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said. As is standard procedure, the District Attorney is reviewing the shooting. A gun from the suspect was recovered at the scene.
The identity of the shooter has not yet been released. Stephen Korpalski has been an officer with the department for 14 years. He is currently assigned to the 15th District. He is married and has a 3 week old daughter. Korpalski was praised by Police Commissioner Ramsey for his quick actions.
