Patricia Garrido, the 88-year-old mother of sex offender Phillip Garrido, said she was horrified to learn that her son had held Jaycee Lee Dugard captive for 18 years. In fact, Patricia said her son had brainwashed her into thinking the girl was his daughter from a former relationship.

After Garrido fathered two daughters with a teenaged Jaycee, Patricia said she believed they too were from a former lover.

Patricia lived in the Garrido home with her son and his wife, Nancy, and was dependent on the couple for care, since she was wheelchair bound.

She told the Mirror she was tricked into believing she had three granddaughters. “Phillip and his elder brother Ron were good boys when growing up. But I always wished I could have had a daughter. So when ‘Allissa’ [Jaycee] appeared one day it was amazing. I was pleased she was around. I was ill and in bed,” she said.

Although Nancy is accused of helping kidnap Jaycee and assisting with her 18-year captivity, Patricia has trouble believing such accusations. “Nancy has a heart of gold and everyone seemed happy. Allissa was a very happy girl. I still call her Allissa because he never told me she was called Jaycee. I just didn’t think there was anything wrong with it,” she said.

According to the Mirror, Patricia grew up in the 1930s during the Great Depression, and saw nothing strange about Jaycee and the girls living outside. “I grew up on a farm and so was used to there being a lot of noise and spending a lot of time outside,” said Patricia.

Of Jaycee, Patricia told the Mirror, “She was… beautiful and very talented at the printing business. She could work the computer well and she showed the girls how she did it. Allissa worked hard with Phil, doing whatever she was told.”

Patricia is struggling to come to terms with what has occurred and her future is now uncertain. After police raided the Garrido home on Aug. 26, Patricia was relocated to a nursing home. She misses all of the girls and said “I don’t know what’s happened to her [Jaycee] now but I love her. I hope she’s okay.”

Of her son, Patricia said, “I had no idea why he would do something like this. I don’t know what’s wrong with him, but he has made the family very sad.”

Both Garrido and his wife have pleaded not guilty to 29 felony counts, including the kidnapping, rape, and false imprisonment of Jaycee.

Jaycee and her daughters have been reunited with her mother, Terry Probyn, and are staying in a safe house in the Los Angeles area.

Patricia's statements sound mentally unbalanced. I understand Patricia is frail and elderly now & might be confused but she wasn't that old when Jaycee first showed up at the house.

I wonder what the rest of Garrido's family knew of Jaycee & the 2 children?

i think this old woman is covering up for her terrible son. 3 women living outside is NOT NORMAL. she was NOT that OLD when Jaycee turned up at her home.. what about Jaycee's PREGNANT belly. where did Patricia think that came from?????? this girl was 14!!!!!

She may just be blinded by the fact that no one would expect that their son would do something like that. People don't generally think like that. This and besides the fact that she was disabled, and was in a wheelchair and might not have had much contact with the outside world. This and besides the fact that many parents often don't know what their adult children are up to to begin with. She was also 70 years old when Jaycee arrived. That is old. What happened to Jaycee effected many lives, and if she *truly* didn't know what had happened then she's a victim too.

The lady is delusional. Did she think these girls are miracles. Just suddenly appeared from no where. What did she think about Jaycee and her big swollen preggies look - twice - too many beans. Get real. She knew Jaycee was not her sons. Oh yes and when her son was in jail and Nancy, by herself enslaved Jaycee, most likely locking her up somewhere for hours during the day while she worked. Yeah Nancy is a true angel all right. A dark angel of misery and torture.
Jaycee had her first at the age of 14 so there is a good chance she was preggies at 13. Grandma just donate your house to Jaycee and her girls to make up for your crime of wanting to believe against the facts that Jaycee was your son's kid.
I think you and your family are all nuts in the head.
