Accused kidnapper Phillip Garrido reportedly told his mother that Jaycee Lee Dugard, who he allegedly held prisoner for 18 years, was his daughter.

88-year-old Patricia Garrido told the U.K. Mirror that her son introduced Dugard as "Allissa", and claimed she was his daughter by a former lover.

"I didn't know she was being kept there against her will. I was in my bed and all I knew was this smiley girl who came to see me," Patricia said.

"She always seemed happy to be there. I thought she was my granddaughter. I don't know what's happened to her now but I love her. I hope she's OK."

Garrido also told Patricia that the two daughters he fathered with Dugard, were also his children from a previous relationship.

"I don't remember how her two little girls came to be there but I thought they were Phillip's. He told me they were all his children," Patricia said.

The girls are now aged 15 and 11.

Patricia Garrido claimed that she didn't think anything of the fact that Dugard and the younger girls were living outside the house. She that because she grew up on a farm she "was used to there being a lot of noise and spending a lot of time outside".

She claimed that her son's co-defendant, daughter-in-law Nancy Garrido "has a heart of gold and everyone seemed happy.

"Allissa was a very happy girl," Patricia said.

"I still call her Allissa because he never told me she was called Jaycee. I just didn't think there was anything wrong with it," the defendant's mother explained.

"I just thought they were my family. I had no idea why he would do something like this. I don't know what's wrong with him but he has made the family very sad," Patricia said.
