Phillip Garrido was in court on Thursday in proceedings related to the Jaycee Lee Dugard kidnapping case. Garrido was confronted by Katherine Callaway Hall. Garrido was convicted of raping Hall 32 years ago, went to jail for 10 years, and was put on probation for life.
Phillip Garrido appeared in court with his wife, Nancy Garrido who has also been held on kidnapping charges in the Jaycee Dugard case.
Katherine Callaway Hall said she "almost broke down" as she watched Garrido. "The same old fears came back, as I felt 32 years ago when he had me," Hall told reporters shortly after the hearing.
"I just feel so intensely passionate about this," she said. "I'm going to make sure that this man goes away forever this time," and stated that she intends to come to more future hearings in this case.
"He looked right at me, and I just glared right back," Hall said. "I just wanted to say, 'Look at me. You know, I'm here.'"
The media asked if she had a message for Jaycee Dugard, Hall said, "Just be strong. Be strong. Try and remember that (Phillip Garrido) did something horribly wrong." She also stated that she would like to meet Dugard someday. "I just want to give her a hug," Hall said.
Phillip and Nancy Garrido will return to court on December 11.
A man who claims to be Jaycee Dugard’s biological father, Ken Slayton was also in attendance in court, with his celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred. Slayton hasn’t met Dugard, and has stated that he didn’t know he had a daughter until after she was kidnapped.
"Hopefully, in a short period of time, I get to see Jaycee," said Slayton. "I want her to know I am in support, and that the support will continue."
Phillip and Nancy Garrido are accused of kidnapping Dugard in 1991, and holding her hostage for 18 years. Dugard also claims that Garrido is the father of her two teenage daughters.
The Jaycee Dugard kidnapping is similar to the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping in that both were held hostage for an extended period of time and found alive. Elizabeth Smart testified against her kidnapper Brian David Mitchell on October 1, 2009. Smart testified that she was raped 3 or 4 times a day, and tied to a pole by Mitchell and his wife.
