Philipp Boy out of American Cup

German gymnasts Nadine Jarosch, Lisa Katharina Hill and Marcel Nguyen are excited for next month's American Cup in New York City, but reigning World silver medalist Philipp Boy has withdrawn from the meet due to a nagging wrist problem, according to the German gymnastics Federation.

Boy, who finished seventh at last year's American Cup before rebounding to win the European all-around title in his home country, is suffering from inflammation of his left wrist and will sit out the early-season meet in order to be better prepared for meets later this year.

"I'm very disappointed because I would like to go, but it can't be helped," Boy said, according to the German Federation's release. "I have to be sure that I heal fully and then I will be able to fully concentrate on preparing for the Olympics."

With Boy out, an eighth competitor is likely to be added to the lineup that already includes Nguyen, Danell Leyva, John Orozco, Oleg Verniaiev, Mykola Kuksenkov, Cyril Tommasone and Daniel Purvis

Jarosch, who finished 10th all-around at the 2011 World Championships, said she is hoping for another smooth competition at Madison Square Garden.

"It's my first competition of the year and I would naturally like to do well," she said. "I know that things don't always go as smoothly as they did at the World Championships in Tokyo, but I want to show what I can do."

The release also noted that Elisabeth Seitz is not attending the American Cup due to lingering problems with her left foot, but that she does plan to compete at the Cottbus World Cup on March 25.
