Philharmonic Showcases Top Area Designers

The Dayton Philharmonic Volunteer Association's annual Designer Show House offers a refreshing change of pace from the many overdone, overblown show houses. The house, located at 210 E. Schantz Avenue in Oakwood, features 25 tastefully decorated rooms. The exterior of the house has been professionally landscaped.

Standout rooms include the master bedroom by Vintage Scout Interiors of Centerville and the tranquil bath by Paul Stepp of In Stepp Design, Dayton. The house's woodwork and period details, especially the stained glass windows, have been beautifully restored. Most of the rooms reflect the historical character of the home.

Wall colors are bold and vibrant, which works well in the house's urban setting. The large front porch's decor is attractive, but not quite in keeping with the design of the house. Similarly, the third floor media room and third floor corridor leave something to be desired. Faux tree branches adorn the ceiling of the corridor and a collage of raptor photographs ascends the staircase. In a house built in 1911, the effect rendered is slightly odd.

All in all, the Schantz House inspires visitors with choking jealousy for its lucky occupants. Formerly the Mission House, it was divided into four apartments for visiting missionaries. No trace of the apartments or the division remains. The designs are elegant and restrained, both inside and outside the property.

The Designer Show House is open through Sunday, June 27, 2010. Tickets are available at the door for $20 or in advance at Dorothy Lane Market, AAA, and other local businesses for $15.
