A day after trading Jeff Parke to DC United for Ethan White, the Philadelphia Union have officially signed midfielder Cristian "Chaco" Maidana to a designated player deal and will occupy an international player spot. Maidana's last played with the Argentinos Juniors.
This signing is good for the Union. Maidana should fill in the void at on the left side and be able to play as a quality winger. Additionally, this move adds a creative playmaker to a midfield, that failed horribly last season to be creative.
Maidana's play impressed Union team manager John Hackworth.
“I was able to see Cristian play several times and I came away extremely impressed with his technical skills, creativity and one vs. one ability,” said team manager John Hackworth. “After having met him personally, I felt even more confident that he was the type of person and player who can benefit our club on and off the field. We are excited that Cristian is a member of the Union.”
Overall, the Union's new signing has the ability to immediately improve the team's play, and this move continues a somewhat expected busy week for Major League Soccer and the Union.
Thursday is the 2014 MLS SuperDraft in Philadelphia, and the host currently has eight picks with two picks in the top ten.
