Philadelphia is a very frustrating place to be a sports fan. While Philly is not in as dire straights as, say Cleveland, who last saw the Browns win a championship in 1964, there are still a lot of Philly sports fans who are left wanting longer playoff runs, and a championship to celebrate year after year.
The last time the Eagles won a championship was in 1960. The Eagles have been to two Super Bowls since then, first in 1980, when they lost to Oakland and then again in 2004, when they came close, but lost to New England. Adding to Eagles fan's frustration was the teams losses in the NFC Championship games from 2000 to 2003. Eagles fans are ever hopeful the team will win a Super Bowl in their lifetime.
The Philadelphia Flyers have fared better then the other franchise making the finals 6 times since 1974. Of course the last time the team hoisted the Stanley Cup was way back in 1974 a mere forty years ago. Flyers fans have endured through a frustrating stretch of time with players coming, who were supposed to lead the team to the promised land but didn't. Does anyone remember Eric Lindros? .
The last team in Philly to win a championship was the Phillies in 2008 but there have many more letdowns from the team than parades. According to ESPN.com, "From the Baker Bowl to Shibe Park/Connie Mack Stadium to the Vet and Citizens Bank Park, futility has tailed them like the sound of boos that echo throughout Philly for the disheartenment of every September collapse, every last-place finish, every near miss."
The Phillies have lost well over 10,000 times since their formation in 1883. It took the Phillies 77 years from the inception of the modern World Series and 97 years since their start to win their first or two World Series Championships.
The Philadelphia 76ers have been a team mired in futility since they were founded in 1946. The team has had some of the greatest talent in NBA history, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, and Allen Iverson, but has managed to win only three championships. The first came in 1955 as the Syracuse Nationals, the second came in the 1966-67 season when Wilt Chamberlain was on the team and the last one during the !982-83 season with Julius Irving. Since then the team has been to the finals only one time in 2001.
While Philly sports fans do get a lot of great team play to cheer about it is all the missed opportunities by all four of the major sports teams which leave fans saying, "if only," oh so to many times. Now the fans of the city, while hoping for a championship, do not want to get their hopes up too much, lest their beating sport's hearts be broken once again.
Of course they will...it is the nature of being a Philly sports fan.
