A TASTE OF PARIS IN PHILADELPHIA PA
By Stu Leventhal (Philadelphia’s Restaurant Consultant)
WINE! PERFUME! HIGH FASHION! AND YES MOST IMPORTANTLY FOOD! FOOD!...GREAT TASTING FOOD!
Foie Gras - duck or goose liver pâté, served with toast points or steak.
Bouillabaisse - A hearty classic French fish soup usually ordered in groups and served family style.
Crepes - French pancakes filled with fruits, jams, vegies, cheeses or meats then rolled up.
Philadelphians love French food and French Wine! We do not always know how to read the menus or correctly pronounce what we ordered but we recognize special, rare, flavor pairings! The French have been known for celebrating the taste buds for thousands of years.
Soupe à l'oignon - yes only the French could have thought of such a decadent looking, smelling and tasting opening course. A simple recipe that combines rich beef broth steeped with caramelized onions, enhanced with a touch of wine, served steaming in a large ceramic crock with bread croutons floating on the surface and stretching up from underneath a thick blanket of melted Gruyère cheese which covers the top of everything and melts, bubbles and burns as it runs down the sides of the very hot bowl!
Escargot – A world renowned French garlic butter, herb and wine recipe for cooking land snails.
Some say the secret to the charm of the French is their attitude. After all, who isn’t drawn to people who are snooty, standoffish and opinionated plus carry themselves with an air of superiority? Philadelphians understands attitude and we have been accused often of being quite opinionated too!
The French have always stood up against anarchy and fought for individual freedom and liberties. We Philadelphians also live in a city known for its historic role in Americas fight for her freedom and liberty against the oppressive English! Paris is regarded by most of the globe to be the world’s most romantic City, in effect to be the City of Love, Philadelphia’s nick name is the City of Brotherly Love. Perhaps all these similarities contribute to why French restaurants do so fabulous here in Philly. One thing is for certain, if you wish to try one of the Philadelphia French restaurants that I recommend in this article during a prime day of the week, a weekend or a holiday, you had better call in advance to make a reservation!
