General manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. recently said that he still wants to fill some 2014 holes before the new season arrives. Pitching and bench depth remain his focus.
Ryan Madson (33) is a former Phillie who is recovering from 'Tommy John' surgery. If healthy by spring training, this veteran reliever could significantly upgrade new bullpen coach Bob McClure's bullpen options.
Chad Gaudin (who will be 31 as of March 24) is very interesting. This veteran right-handed pitcher has mostly served as a reliever in his 11-year career. But, he's also started 87 games, including 12 last season for the San Francisco Giants.
Lyle Overbay (37 as of January 28) appeared in 142 games for the New York Yankees last season, 130 of which were at first base. The addition of this 13-year veteran, left-handed hitter to the roster would surely be an insurance play against Ryan Howard's health.
Ryne Sandberg has the chops to be a successful major league manager. But, the realities connected to the core of his mostly-veteran 2014 squad could limit how many wins 'Ryno' will be able to create this season.
